North Dakota Winter Tested!

When buying Columbia down coats, note the down 'fill' number - on this particular coat, it's 590, which I think is one of the thinnest ones. There's 650, 740, 860 fill; the higher fill, the puffier and potentially warmer the coat will be. This is a very thin coat. But I wanted the warmest low-profile slim fit coat I could find, one that squished up and packed really small, since I travel all the time, and also a coat that was a little dressier than a regular ski parka, and this coat definitely fits the bill. The TurboDown/OmniHeat coats have a reflective silver inner layer- sort of like a fancy soft emergency blanket- that helps keep body heat in. It works - the coat itself feels warm to the touch inside when I take it off. Plus I like the silver on the inside, it looks cool. But I wanted a coat that wasn't super shiny on the outside. If you look at some of the other models, the black color looks like a garbage bag. I emailed Columbia before I bought it, and they confirmed, this coat was more of a matte finish. However, some other styles have a rip-stop outer shell, if that's important to you. I absolutely wanted an attached hood, and this one is great. It does not have - or need - a drawcord on the hood. The hood stays on when zipped up, even in the crazy constant North Dakota wind. The zipper is plastic so it doesn't freeze on your chin when you zip up the hood. It does have adjustable drawcord on the waist hem. When I bought it, I wished the sleeves had a powder cuff like a ski jacket, but they just have a non-elastic binding, but its fine, I don't miss the powder cuff. Some people have mentioned the feathers coming out, but I've only had a couple poke out. No problem. It really is a nice quality coat. While it was fine for cold, this coat would not work well in rain or wet snow (I have a big super fancy ski parka for skiing - this coat worked OK on a bluebird ski day but that's not its purpose). I am 5'4" and 140 lbs, medium chest, and I bought a large size, thinking it would fit over a sweater or sweatshirt, and it does. Because I got a large, the arms are a little long but not a problem. They stay where they need to be with the cuff binding. I definitely need to wear a sweater or sweat shirt under it on the coldest days. I spent a lot of time in North Dakota this winter, and it was a pretty cold winter; there were literally weeks when it was way below zero (f) in the day, and with windchill, several times it hit -45f. This is not a coat to wear if you work or play outdoors at those extreme cold temps, but for short walks, travelling in airplane or car, grocery shopping, or shoveling snow (so much shoveling....) this coat exceeded my expectations. I am 100% satisfied with this coat.
Big disappointment

Very thin. Not very warm. Have had this for a week and feathers are coming out all over. Threads coming out and have only had it about a month. Seems like a cheap imitation or counterfeit. If it's not a fake Columbia needs to reevaluate their manufacturing process because they're making junk.
Columbia Lightweight down jacket.

I love the fit and color of this coat. It is lightweight and has kept me warm while hiking and snowshoeing in relatively cold weather (15-25 degrees). However I am disappointed in the quality of the coat itself. The stitching is poor and I have noticed it has let loose in places. The outside material is thin and looses down and is easily punctured. I have only had the coat for a few months and have a small tear on the sleeve. I have always had good luck with Columbia products but I am hesitant to purchase another coat online due to the poor quality of this product.
Great Coat

After reading reviews I didnât expect this coat to be as nice as it is. Itâs just the right weight for what I wanted, which was a medium warmth coat, the fit is very nice, and it was sturdier in construction than I expected from the reviews. Itâs actually nicer than the Sddie Bauer jacket Iâm replacing, and about half as expensive.

BEST JACKET EVER. I bought XS and it fit perfect. I'm 5'5" 125lbs. The color is so fun without being obnoxious. It is not at all shiny on the outside. I love the turbo liner...makes it look like a space suit inside and REALLY works to keep you warm. I've never had a jacket where I get so warm I have to take it off.

Comfortable, lightweight, nicely fitted, and always seems to be the correct level of warmth. I have worn it in 45-60 degree temps, so I'm not really challenging it, but I get the feeling that it would do well in even colder weather.

An amazing jacket. I needed something warm and packable for a trip to Ushuaia (end of the world). It was the best purchase ever. Weather was cold and windy and this jacket was amazing. Enjoyed the glaziers view from the cruise deck with no problem. It just made my trip more enjoyable. It packed well inside my backpack. Amazing product. Only issue is that some feathers came out but I hope it lasts for many more years.
