Not really made for riding

snowman

Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2016

I wanted to like this coat but it suffers from some serious design flaws: it does not cover the saddle like most other dusters; instead it is split up the back so it only covers your legs. Also, the waist is a bit tight so it rides up when sitting. This may keep your upper body and legs dry, but your butt will get soaked. Too bad, because the material is very nice and the construction seems solid. Could be a good coat for walking around town, but not for actually riding.

NO HYPE: Excellent - EXCEPTIONAL - Quality & Design

Wm. Wallace

Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2017

Excellent - exceptional - quality & design! Well thought-out design: Velcro-ed pocket flaps (quality zippers); elastic waist adjuster (quality fittings); extra roomy hood with its own unique elastic adjusting system; a mysteriously purposed, inside upper-back area, zipped (1 sq ft) pocket/compartment with 2 inside straps; main zipper high quality & rugged; and, it is supple, "cloth"-like in how it lays on the body - not that stiff, yellow rain-jacket-shell feel. (Also has leg straps for horseback, but I won't need that.) So impressed with the overall quality that I felt duty-bound to share this with others because design & quality workmanship like this deserves to be promoted in our day of manufacturing shoddiness. I give my highest recommendation for this product and I'm just a regular customer with no connection to this company; but, Outback Trading has earned my highest regards and I will seek them out first for future such products if & when the need arrives. Great job, Outback!

Started off waterproof, but then the rain soaked right through it after 5 months

I'm a dog walker. The raincoats I've had in the past were great at first but then started to leak at the seams. I've only had this coat for about a month, but it is great so far. I love, love the backpack so that I can carry it with me on my outings in the park if the forecast calls for rain without putting it on. The zipper works really smoothly, I think because it is metal, unlike most of the other jackets. To be honest, I started searching for a long rain coat after admiring one that another person got from LL Bean about 10 years ago. But they've changed their design and what they currently sell is inferior quality. This one from Outback Trading is exactly what I wanted.EDIT: I've just changed my rating from 5 stars to 2. Unfortunately this rain coat is the same as every other raincoat I've ever had: it loses it waterproofness. I've had this coat for about 5 months. Today was a steady rain. Not pouring cats and dogs, but a moderate rain. I was out walking with the dogs for 1.5 hours. Although the shoulders continued to be waterproof, the lower part did not. After about 30 minutes, I could feel the rain soaking into my pants under the coat at the thighs. When I got back to the car and took off the coat, there were some sections where the water was beading, but others where the water just soaked right in.I don't know why it's so hard for someone to make a raincoat that stays waterproof, but it seems to be impossible.

Wanted to Keep Jacket

Beth H.

Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2017

I have the shorter version of this jacket & love it. I thought I would try longer version. When it arrived, I immediately took it out of plastic packaging & hung it up. There was a strange, but strong odor. I thought it would go away after being out of plastic. I kept noticing it in my closet, so I moved it to another area where it would get more ventilation. Odor remained. Other than trying to wash it, I didn't know anything else to do as I was afraid I might damage waterproofing. I elected to not take a chance on washing it, and sadly returned it. This is a great coat, and it has nice features. Zippers are strong, and it is well made. I needed it for a upcoming trip, & did not think I would have time to go through the exchange process. I'm giving it three stars only because of that strange odor

This is a great raincoat! I'm 5'-11"

Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2017

This is a great raincoat! I'm 5'-11", 160 lbs. and 34" sleeve length--I ordered a Large and the sleeve length was perfect and there's enough room to wear a heavy sweater under it and not have it be too snug. It's long enough that it goes over my calf-length rubber boots. If you're looking for the ultimate, never replace it with something better, then this is it. I'd give it six stars if I could. It has so many nice features, like Velcro wrist adjustments, it packs into its own pouch, etc.The fabric is quite soft; a nylon that's waterproofed, not like the stiff PVC jobbers. This was exactly what I was looking for.

Good coat, poor service.

Does not cover legs during rainy ride. Hood elastic tie broke the first time I used it, and it took almost a month to get a refund. OK for lightly rainy days, does cover back of saddle. Covers helmet well. Just not made as well as their oilskin dusters. But if you’re going into summer rains it should be OK. Just get rain pants, too. The reason for 2 stars is the lousy customer service.

Great Slicker

Skipper T

Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019

I bought this to ride a horse or horses in and it has worked great. It is comfortable and repels rain nicely. it may be a bit warm in summer but what slicker wouldn't be. The fit is a bit smaller than I thought it would be but as a result it keeps things from being to noisy and "flappy" while on the horse, less spooking while on the horse. I would prefer it to be 6 inches longer but oh well. The leg straps are ideal for holding down the side while riding. The hood is my only issue, I would prefer it to roll up into a collar slot, not just roll up. I wear wool crush-able cowboy hats and they fit inside the hood with just a bout 2 inches sticking out the front.I would highly recommend this product!

Great coat, packs easily, carries easily. Great length for when you're caught in a downpour. We carried them to fairs and festivals all summer.

I was looking for a long raincoat extending below my knees for dog walking in rainy BC for ages. Surprisingly hard to find. This is perfect.

This item comes huge because it's supposed to go over a jacket if necessary, so be careful. I had to return mine for a smaller size, it was really complicated and took forever. But now that I have the right size in black, I love it. It's well made and thoughtfully designed with multiple openings, closures and pockets. It can be folded in a flat pack. I really like the velcro at the wrists and the hood goes over my various headwear. I look forward to keep this for many years to come.
